A discipline, not a project
Cyber security is a standing function with policies, tools, budgets and metrics. Disinformation, Gartner’s Dave Aron argues, now needs the same: “a discipline inside the company that addresses disinformation.” He and his co-authors call it TrustOps, “ops” in the spirit of DevOps and SecDevOps, and Aron credits his co-author Andrew Frank with coining the term. And it breaks cleanly into two jobs.
Job one: grounding
Grounding, in Aron’s words, is making sure “the information that we’re taking in and using to make decisions is the ground truth, and the information that we publish for our clients and others is grounded in the truth.” It runs in both directions: verifying the inputs your decisions rest on, and proving the authenticity of what you put out. Job two: debunking
Debunking is the outward-facing half: countering “these narratives in the market.” It means knowing when a false or unfair narrative is forming against you, your executives or your industry, and being able to respond before it sets.
